Stella Adler’s Technique
Imagination over memory, given circumstances, and the Adler approach to script analysis.
Published April 19, 2025
Adler argued imagination beats memory. Build the world; the feeling follows.
Where Strasberg leaned on personal memory, Adler taught actors to imagine. The result is a technique that scales beyond your biography.
The work, step by step
- Given circumstances first. Build the world of the play exhaustively. Geography, era, social order.
- Imagination over memory. Don’t recall - imagine. The actor’s imagination is the instrument.
- Script analysis. A page-by-page reading for character intent, contradiction, and theme.
- Size and scale. Adler trained actors for size - theatrical scale grounded in truth.
- Duty to the playwright. Serve the text. The character lives in the writing first.
Common pitfalls
- Skipping textual analysis.
- Imagining the feeling instead of the circumstance.
- Playing "size" as volume.
