Stella Adler’s Technique

Imagination over memory, given circumstances, and the Adler approach to script analysis.

Published April 19, 2025

Adler argued imagination beats memory. Build the world; the feeling follows.

Where Strasberg leaned on personal memory, Adler taught actors to imagine. The result is a technique that scales beyond your biography.

The work, step by step

  1. Given circumstances first. Build the world of the play exhaustively. Geography, era, social order.
  2. Imagination over memory. Don’t recall - imagine. The actor’s imagination is the instrument.
  3. Script analysis. A page-by-page reading for character intent, contradiction, and theme.
  4. Size and scale. Adler trained actors for size - theatrical scale grounded in truth.
  5. Duty to the playwright. Serve the text. The character lives in the writing first.
