Lee Strasberg’s Technique: The American Method

Strasberg made the Method the dominant American acting tradition. Love or hate it, you should understand it.

Strasberg’s name carries baggage. The exercises themselves are foundational - relaxation, sense memory, affective memory.

The work, step by step

  1. Relaxation exercise. A 20-minute body scan. Tension is the enemy of impulse.
  2. Sense memory. Recreate a sensory experience precisely. Drinking coffee. Sun on skin. Specificity is the goal.
  3. Affective memory. Use a personal emotional event - at minimum 7 years old - to fuel a scene’s emotion.
  4. Private moment. A moment you would do only alone - performed publicly. Trains "public solitude".
  5. Animal exercise. Embody an animal’s rhythm and use it to physicalize character.
