Lee Strasberg’s Technique: The American Method
Strasberg’s codification of the Method - affective memory, relaxation, sense memory, and his exercises.
Published April 15, 2025
Strasberg made the Method the dominant American acting tradition. Love or hate it, you should understand it.
Strasberg’s name carries baggage. The exercises themselves are foundational - relaxation, sense memory, affective memory.
The work, step by step
- Relaxation exercise. A 20-minute body scan. Tension is the enemy of impulse.
- Sense memory. Recreate a sensory experience precisely. Drinking coffee. Sun on skin. Specificity is the goal.
- Affective memory. Use a personal emotional event - at minimum 7 years old - to fuel a scene’s emotion.
- Private moment. A moment you would do only alone - performed publicly. Trains "public solitude".
- Animal exercise. Embody an animal’s rhythm and use it to physicalize character.
Common pitfalls
- Using affective memory carelessly - get a teacher.
- Skipping relaxation.
- Treating exercises as performance.
