How to Start Acting With No Experience
A practical roadmap for absolute beginners - first month, first year, and the choices that matter.
Published July 30, 2025
Starting acting at any age is the same first step: read a play out loud.
Beginners look for permission to start. There isn’t any. Begin.
The work, step by step
- Month 1: read 4 plays out loud. Doesn’t matter which. Reading aloud builds the foundation.
- Month 2: take an intro class. Local community theater, a beginner studio, or a six-week scene-study course.
- Month 3: memorize one monologue. A 60-second piece. Drill it in Actry daily.
- Month 4: do a community theater play. Audition for the local community theater. They’re always casting.
- Month 6: assess. Are you having fun? Is craft growing? Do you want more?
Common pitfalls
- Waiting to feel "ready".
- Spending money on headshots before you’ve done any work.
- Comparing yourself to working actors.

Frequently asked questions
Am I too old?
No.
Do I need natural talent?
Less than you think. Reps matter more.
Can I be self-taught?
