How to Build Acting Experience Without an Agent
Self-submit, casting platforms, student films, indie shorts - how to build a reel and credits without representation.
Published August 20, 2025
You don’t need an agent to work. You need a reel.
New actors stall waiting for representation. The path is to build experience first; representation follows.
The work, step by step
- Sign up for casting platforms. Backstage, Casting Networks, Actors Access. Set up a real profile.
- Submit to student films. NYU, USC, AFI, UCLA, all post calls. They feed your reel.
- Audition for theater. Community and small-house theater is always casting. Stage credits build resume.
- Self-tape often. Self-submit auditions are the foundation of an unrepresented career.
- Build a reel. Cut a 90-second reel from the work you do. Update every six months.
Common pitfalls
- Paying for casting "opportunities".
- Holding out for paid work only.
- Not crediting yourself in projects.
How Actry fits in
Actry is the rehearsal partner for everything you self-submit. Cheaper than coaching; available at 2 a.m.
