Demo Reel Essentials
What to put on a demo reel, what order, how long, and what to leave off.

A great reel shows you do specific work well. A bad reel shows you’re hopeful.
Most reels open with a slate, run too long, and try to show range. The opposite formula books.
The work, step by step
- 60–90 seconds total. Casting watches the first 15 seconds. The whole reel rarely.
- Open on your strongest moment. No slate, no name card. Straight to the work.
- Show one type clearly. Not a range showcase. A clear, specific lane.
- Close-ups, please. Wide shots don’t cut. Cameras want eyes.
- Update every 6 months. A 2-year-old reel reads stale.
Common pitfalls
- Slate + name + agency at the top.
- Music over dialogue.
- Wide shots only.
