How to Handle Callback Nerves Without Faking Calm

Practical, body-first ways to manage callback nerves - physiological tools, mental reframes, and the room behavior that masks adrenaline.

Published February 22, 2025

Calm is not the goal. Useful nerves are.

Suppressing nerves is a losing game; the body keeps the score. The work is to redirect the energy so it serves the scene instead of leaking out as twitches.

The work, step by step

  1. Long exhale, short inhale. A 6-count exhale and 4-count inhale, three rounds, drops your heart rate measurably. Do it in the parking lot, not the lobby.
  2. Move before you sit. Five minutes of walking before a callback is worth more than thirty minutes of scene work. Adrenaline metabolizes through movement.
  3. Name the feeling, then drop it. "I am nervous" said out loud (alone) does measurable work. Naming reduces amplitude.
  4. Rebrand the energy. Reframe nerves as "the body getting ready". Same physiology; different relationship.
  5. Plant your feet. Pre-scene, feet hip-width, weight even. The body uses ground contact as a regulation cue.

Common pitfalls

Pro tip: Practice the audition exactly as you’ll perform it - out loud, on your feet - at least once that morning. The body needs to have done it before before doing it that day.

How Actry fits in

Actry’s self-tape mode is the cheapest dress rehearsal: tape the scene the morning of, watch it in the lobby, walk in with the body knowing it has done this once already today.

Frequently asked questions

Are nerves bad?

No. Suppressed nerves are bad. Nerves with somewhere to go become focus.

Should I tell casting I’m nervous?

No. They are not your therapist and they will adjust their read of your work to accommodate it.

What if I forget a line in the callback?

Stay in. Recover specifically. Do not break the imaginary world to apologize for being a person inside it.
