The Michael Chekhov Technique

Psychological gesture, atmospheres, qualities - Chekhov’s body-first approach to imagination and character.

Published April 26, 2025

Chekhov found the character in the body before the head.

Most modern training is text-first. Chekhov starts with movement and lets the imagination follow.

The work, step by step

  1. Psychological gesture. A full-body gesture that contains the character’s essence.
  2. Atmospheres. Tune yourself to the scene’s atmosphere - joy, dread, calm - with whole-body sensitivity.
  3. Qualities. Move with a chosen quality (heaviness, lightness, sharpness) to discover character.
  4. Imaginary body. Adopt an imaginary physical body different from your own - bigger, smaller, older.
  5. Center. Locate where the character lives in the body - chest, head, gut.
