The Michael Chekhov Technique
Psychological gesture, atmospheres, qualities - Chekhov’s body-first approach to imagination and character.
Published April 26, 2025
Chekhov found the character in the body before the head.
Most modern training is text-first. Chekhov starts with movement and lets the imagination follow.
The work, step by step
- Psychological gesture. A full-body gesture that contains the character’s essence.
- Atmospheres. Tune yourself to the scene’s atmosphere - joy, dread, calm - with whole-body sensitivity.
- Qualities. Move with a chosen quality (heaviness, lightness, sharpness) to discover character.
- Imaginary body. Adopt an imaginary physical body different from your own - bigger, smaller, older.
- Center. Locate where the character lives in the body - chest, head, gut.
Common pitfalls
- Treating gestures as choreography.
- Ignoring the body’s information.
- Forcing imagination instead of inviting it.
How Actry fits in
Use a Chekhov-prepared physical state, then run the scene in Actry. The body work is offline; the reps are in-app.
