How to Prepare for a Musical Theater Audition

16 bars, sides, a cold dance call, and a holding room. A working musical theater audition prep workflow.

Published March 1, 2025

Musical theater audition rooms move fast and judge the first eight bars. Prep is everything.

Singers get the song right and lose the audition because the choices weren’t there. Actors get the choices right and lose because the cut wasn’t prepared. The job is to bring both - every time.

The work, step by step

  1. Pick a cut that shows your money note and your acting. 16 bars is too short for a story but long enough for a moment. Pick something you can dramatize, not just sing.
  2. Mark the score for your accompanist. Tempo, key, repeats, vamps, cuts - clearly marked. This is craft, not optional.
  3. Drill the song as a monologue. Sing through. Then speak the lyric like a monologue. Find the intent. Then sing it again with that intent embedded.
  4. Memorize the sides cold. You will be handed sides in the room or via email. Treat them like an audition, not a footnote.
  5. Bring shoes and a track. Heels or character shoes for women, dance shoes for everyone in a dance call. A backup track on your phone in case the accompanist is late.

Common pitfalls

How Actry fits in

Drill the audition sides in Actry between voice lessons. The AI scene partner gives you reps without booking another rehearsal pianist.

Frequently asked questions

How many songs should I have ready?

A book of 6–10 cuts across belt, mix, head voice, comedic, dramatic, and one solid ballad and one solid up-tempo.

Should my song match the show?

In style and era, yes. Don’t sing a contemporary belt for a Rodgers and Hammerstein call.

What about dance?

Take a class weekly. Dance calls eliminate fast.
