Breath Support for Acting: The Foundation
Why breath support is the bedrock of voice work, and the exercises that build it.
Published June 5, 2025
Voice without breath is just throat.
Most vocal problems - fry, push, monotony - are breath problems. Solve breath, the rest follows.
The work, step by step
- Belly breathing on the floor. 5 minutes daily. Hand on belly. The belly rises on inhale, falls on exhale.
- The hiss exhale. Inhale 4. Hiss out 12. Build to 30. Trains capacity and control.
- Number counting on one breath. Count 1–20 on a single exhale. Add a number weekly.
- Standing breath. Same exercises, standing. Notice where the body collapses; correct.
- Spoken phrase on breath. A short text on a single breath. Forces breath economy.
Common pitfalls
- Shoulder breathing.
- Holding the breath at the top.
- Skipping rest between sets.
How Actry fits in
After breath work, run lines in Actry. The line ratings often shift when breath is fully behind the voice.
